Okay this is one of those "get involved" blog entries? The question is, What is your favorite way to do your devotions? Do you like to do them in the morning, at night, during the day? What version of the Bible do you use? Do you use devotional books, study books, commentaries. Do you meet with people to do studies.
Basically, how do you feed yourself spiritually?
So if you are reading this blog, you must answer. It is the law. Let us know what you do, so we can learn and grow from you.
I will start. I prefer to read the Bible in the mornings. I like to go to different places in the house to read when the kids are still sleeping. I love to drink coffee when I read. I love Bibles with commentaries, so I can dig deeper into what I am reading. Generally I like to take my time on a passage so I can really understand the meanings and truths behind what I am reading. My favorite thing to do is meet with someone 1 time a week(like at starbucks), and study the same passage of scripture together. One of my favorite translations is the New Living Translation. But I read from a couple different ones. That is a start. I don't want to bore you.
Okay your turn. Comment and let us know what you do.

OK, I will start. I do my devotions at night. Anyone who has lived or worked with me knows that my brain does not work for the first two hours of the morning, so I have to wait until night when I can understand what I am reading. Right now I am using a one year bible that splits the Bible into days of the year. Each day has a portion of the Old Testemant, New Testament, Proverbs and Psalms. And if you read everyday for one year then you will have read through the whole Bible.
I like to read my devotions out of the New King James. It is one of my favorites as it keeps the poetry of the Bible intact but is still easily understandable. Commentaries are also good especially for those chapters you have to read 3 times.
good call man.
If I'm not careful I make my devo's out to be solely information. I have noticed that, as strange as it may be, I pray better and more spiritual in front of others. On the other hand the well seems dryer when it's just me and God. Lately I have been reading a book by John Bailee called a diary of private prayer. I know a lot of us need consistency with our personal time with God but mine is always changing. What is working now will not be effective next month.
I,like donnycon, have a brain that takes a few hours to wake up. My favorite time with my Father is around 10 or 11 a.m. I go to my room and curl up on my bed (living with a 2 yr old that gets up before the sun makes this necessary) and fellowship. I like to read (like a novel) the New Century version. But to study, I like the New King James. I also have my one on one with the Lord at this time and I have a wipe off
board with all my personal requests hanging on the wall . I also like to pray through a Psalm everyday.
I LOVE to get up at 5:00, (like Doug)I pour a cup of coffee and dig into scripture. It is so peaceful at my house at this time. Once the boys get up I have no opportunity to really LISTEN to what God is saying to me.I came across John Courson's Application Commentary Bible. He gives detailed commentary on each passage in the bible. I like what he writes because it is real life, genuine, to the point. I have gained SO much insight through his commentary.
my brain never shuts down...i don't think? anywho - when i am in the "norm" (is there really such a thing) i PREFER to do them prior to heading off to work BUT i find myself doing them through out the day and i've been known to do them @ night as well....if something strikes me in the day or evening, it tends to draw me back to God so i end up communing w/Him in those moments & i consider that "devotional!" have i lost anyone yet?
